Chem Chem Lodge

Privacy. Luxury. Tranquillity.

We believe that the most effective and immediate way to impact wildlife conservation and community development positively is to go on safari. By paying conservation fees – a tariff worked into the cost of your safari collected by our partners and transferred to indigenous landowners – you directly finance conservation and give communities (like the Maasai and Samburu) a tangible incentive to protect East Africa's beautiful flora and fauna.

Also, booking your safari at the top eco-friendly lodges and camps in East Africa help create jobs for local community members. COVID-19 had a devastating impact (hopefully temporary) on tourism and the local communities that rely on it for financial support.

Ecotourism in East Africa will play a vital role in the recovery of safari travel, now more than ever. And by going on a sustainable safari, you have the opportunity to give back. So, if you're considering a safari with a purpose, we've rounded up some of our favorite eco-friendly lodges in East Africa…

An elegant and intimate lodge located in a private concession between Tarangire and Lake Manyara National Parks, Chem Chem Lodge offers spectacular views over a waterhole and plains with Lake Manyara in the distance. Combining European style with African influences, this owner-run Lodge brings together earthy yet modern elements.

Perfectly situated at the heart of the northern Tanzania safari experience, Chem Chem is an excellent choice for an itinerary taking in Tanzania's flagship destinations: the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. Take the time to relax after all those early-morning starts on safari and enjoy a soothing massage or treatment at the spa. The pace at Chem Chem Lodge echoes the Swahili saying, 'Pole, pole,' which means 'slowly, slowly. There is no rush here.

But no rush does not mean there is nothing to do.... there is also plenty to offer at Chem Chem: go on a 'slow safari' or a guided walking tour of the private concession, observe thousands of flamingos and other water birds on the lake in season, or take a private guided 4x4 safari to Lake Manyara National Park. For an entirely different perspective, take a hot-air balloon safari and float over the mesmerizing landscape of the Great Rift Valley. Children will enjoy learning traditional Maasai spear-throwing techniques, decorating safari-themed biscuits, and playing soccer at a local community school (do consider packing soccer balls and stationery for the pupils).

Chem Chem Lodge is an elegant and intimate property situated in a private concession between Tarangire and Lake Manyara National Parks. Not only do the owners manage and operate Chem Chem to ensure guests receive personal attention, but they also share a deep love and respect for Tanzania's delicate ecosystem.

Lemala Nanyukie

Opened in October 2018 in the fabulous Serengeti National Park in Eastern Serengeti, Lemala Nanyukie matches the same outstanding standards of comfort and service as the other properties in Lemala’s luxury collection, which includes the Serengeti’s Lemala Kuria Hills Lodge and Lemala Mpingo Ridge in Tarangire together with Hamerkop House by Lemala in Arusha.

Meaning ‘endless plains’ in the Maasai language, the Serengeti is undoubtedly one of the world's most celebrated wilderness areas. Lemala Nanyukie is located a 45-minute drive east of the Seronera Airstrip in the park’s central region, and is superbly located with outstanding views across these fascinating ‘endless plains’. The camp itself sits on a grassy savanna dotted with rocky kopjes and shaded by ancient giant acacia trees.

With canvas walls, cathedral-like tented ceilings and broad hardwood decks, guests at Lemala Nanyukie can expect a light contemporary décor in a palette of dazzling whites and neutral colours, with warmth introduced by textured accessories, luxurious upholstery, wooden furnishings, and well-executed lighting.

The main double-volume area will feature a comfortable lounge and bar, outdoor viewing deck leading to a refreshing swimming pool, and indoor and outdoor dining areas. Additionally Lemala will arrange special meals like bush breakfasts and lantern-lit dinners, and the campfire is perfect for a post-dinner drink and share tales about the day on safari. A separate spa tent among the trees offers secluded relaxation.

The 15 luxurious guest tents (13 standard suites + 1 x 2 bedroomed suite) are spaced well apart for maximum privacy—five have extra day beds so triples can be accommodated, and the two-bedroom one is perfect for families or friends. Features include an oversized bed, spacious lounge, and generous bathroom with double vanity, shower and free-standing bathtub. The delightful wooden deck has sunken seating, outdoor shower and stunning corner plunge pool with views directly across the Serengeti’s magnificent grasslands.

This area of the Serengeti is crossed by the thrilling wildlife spectacle of the annual wildebeest migration, but also has high-density game-viewing at all times and is well-known for its large concentration of cats. As such Lemala Nanyukie will be open year-round, and safari activities like game drives and walks will be accompanied by Lemala’s highly-knowledgeable and experienced guides.

The Serengeti

"A great option for those seeking a traditional, down-to-earth safari experience with excellent guiding and great access to the wildebeest migration for the river crossings and calving season in particular."

Sebastian- Senior Safari Specialist with Hello Zebra

With two excellent locations away from the busier areas, Wayo Africa has created one of the best value properties we've visited anywhere in East Africa. Comfort is more than covered here but Wayo Green focuses on adventure above all else, and the thunderous action that the Great Migration provides! The idea is to focus on the southern plains for the calving season at the start of the year (Kusini area, Dec–Marc), and then move to the north during the dry season for the famous river crossings over the Mara River (Kogatende area, June–Nov). The difference from other mobiles is Wayo’s great ability to locate the camps away from the crowds, without missing out on any of the fantastic game viewing. The camps are simple but certainly comfortable, with flush toilets and hot bucket showers, and the guiding is very good. If you’re looking for an authentic, great-value safari experience, right in the heart of Africa’s biggest show, then Wayo is a fantastic choice.

Wayo Africa specialized in off-the-beaten-track safaris in Northern Tanzania before the company moved into the Serengeti, and it’s worth taking a peek at their sister camps Wayo Trekking Camp and Wayo Walking Camp. As their names suggest, these offer slightly more niche experiences. However, like Serengeti Green, both receive consistently excellent reviews!

ACCESS & LOCATION:

The northern location sits quietly just to the east of Tabora (inside the park), whereas the southern location is just to the east of the Kusini Kopjes. Both locations can offer short walking safaris. Should you wish to do more walking, they have a specialized walking camp – and in high season, you can even trek between the two camps. At both locations, the camp is accessed via a short 4x4 transfer from the local airstrip, Serengeti South or Kogatende. You will be met on arrival and start game viewing right from the off as you drive to camp!

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT SERENGETI GREEN CAMP:

Guest accommodation at both camps consists of ten adventurous mobile tents, brilliantly designed so you have views from your bed through netted floor-to-ceiling ‘windows’. Dropdown covers can be drawn across to seal you in if you’re in any way concerned about being quite so open! Room features include double beds or twin beds, bedside tables and lighting, and luggage racks. The overhanging roof allows space for a pair of chairs in front of your room, for relaxing and enjoying the views. Each tent features an en-suite bathroom, accessible through a zip door beside the luggage rack. This offers twin washbasins, a toilet, and a bucket shower with a raised wooden platform. The camp supplies basics such as soap, shampoo, and conditioner.

A lot of time at Wayo Serengeti Green Camp is focused around the campfire, as all great safaris should be! Meals are often served al fresco, prepared by the camp’s chef, and the main areas are simple yet comfortable. The accommodation is booked on a full-board basis, including all meals and a selection of alcoholic and soft drinks. Children aged 16 years and younger incur just 50 percent of the adult rate, making this already affordable option even better for families.

ACTIVITIES AT SERENGETI GREEN CAMP:

The camp (whether set up north or south of the Serengeti) is always well-placed to offer top-notch game viewing of the Great Migration. That’s the main purpose of this mobile outfit, and they do it very well.

  • Expertly guided game drives

    - There are two game sessions daily, during the morning and late afternoon. As the camps are located right in the center of the migration, you are spoilt for choice when it comes to viewing wildlife. Among the highlights of the Serengeti are lion, elephant, hyena, and buffalo. You can look out for smaller predators too, among them jackal, serval, civet, honey badger, and the rare wild dog. The large herbivore collection includes giraffes, wildebeest, zebra, and an assortment of antelopes.

  • Walking safaris

    - Why not head out into the bush with an armed guide? As well as enjoying some animal tracking and the area’s great birdlife, you can take a closer look at the reserve’s insects and plants. Different levels and distances are available, depending on the ages of your group. Classic walking safari is offered to guests aged 12 years and over.

  • Hot air balloons

    - Taking to the skies and seeing the herds from above is a pretty special experience! With the vast savanna below and volcanic landscapes in the distance, this is one of the best places in the world to go ballooning. Rides take place in the morning and must be pre-booked at extra cost. Please chat with one of our specialists about how to include this activity in your safari stay.

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
