Climb Mt. Kilimanjaro in support of Tanzanian women

“Give a Heart to Africa”

Empowering Women through Education

YOU WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER CLIMBING KILIMANJARO. THE WOMEN

YOU HELP WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER YOU. June 16- June 22, 2025

Kilimanjaro is the highest free-standing and walkable mountain in the world. It is often referred to as the Roof of Africa because, at its 5,895 meters( 19,341ft ), it towers over clouds as Africa’s highest peak. To climb Kilimanjaro, you do not need mountaineering expertise, but you need to be generally fit and have no breathing-related problems.

Climbing Kilimanjaro can be a rewarding experience for many different reasons. It can be a personal challenge, putting your body and mind to the test, as climbing Kili is often mind over matter. It can be a great group, family, or company event that brings people closer together. It can also be a way to give back to the community from which most Kili porters and guides come, and local people get their crops and water.

Give a Heart To Africa is an established non-profit organization located at the foothills of Kilimanjaro. All its funds go directly back to the community via our business vocational school, women’s co-operative, other businesses, and further education sponsorship.

Your Climb:

You will climb via the Machane route in 7 days.

Machame can be climbed in 6 days; however, having an additional day to acclimatize to the altitude increases your chance of reaching the summit. You will start your climb via Machame Gate and descend via Mweka Gate. Machame is one of the preferred routes, and it has a high success rate of reaching Uhuru Peak. You will sleep in tents provided by our Kilimanjaro team and eat in a dining tent with fellow climbers. Bring your climbing gear and clothing, or rent what you need in Moshi.

Cost: please inquire at info@urthsafari.com

The cost will vary depending on the total number of climbers:

Group of 5 – 9 climbers*: $per person

Group of 10 or more climbers*: $. per person

The $100 donation to GHTA is built into the cost of the climb, but we encourage all climbers to fundraise as part of this once-in-a-lifetime experience. Make your climb mean more! Mt. Kilimanjaro via Machame Route

Summary

Host: Gabriele Brown with Urth Expedition in partnership with Give a Heart to Africa.

The seven-day Machame is a beautiful way up Mt. Kilimanjaro. The scenery, balanced with an itinerary that allows sufficient time to acclimatize, makes this route very popular. The Machame allows you to experience a variety of terrains as you ascend via the southwestern side of the mountain and descend via the southern side. From late afternoon sunsets at Shira to the misty revelations of Kibo’s great Barranco Wall, the Machame route offers the spunky hiker a continuous scenic slide show.

DAY 3: MACHAME GATE TO MACHAME CAMP

•Elevation (ft): 5,400ft to 9,400ft

•Distance: 11 km

•Hiking Time: 5-7 hours

•Habitat: Montane Forest

After breakfast at your hotel, you will be driven to Machame Village, where your guides and porters

will prepare and pack your equipment and supplies. After registering at the park office, you will start

your ascent and enter the rainforest immediately. Heavy rains on this mountainside often transform

the trail into a soggy, slippery experience, so good footwear, walking poles, and gaiters are useful. You

will enjoy a lunch stop halfway up and reach Machame Camp in the late afternoon. Your porters will

arrive at camp and erect your tent before you arrive. In the evening, enjoy a delicious dinner prepared

by your cook. Dress warmly. Night temperatures can drop to freezing at Machame Camp

DAY 4: MACHAME CAMP TO SHIRA CAMP

•Elevation (ft): 9,400ft to 12,500ft

•Distance: 5 km•Hiking Time: 4-6 hours

•Habitat: Moorland

After breakfast, we leave the rainforest glades and continue on an ascending path, crossing the

little valley and walking along a steep rocky ridge covered with heather until the ridge ends.

After a short lunch and rest, you will continue up a rocky ridge onto the Shira Plateau, where you

can see Kilimanjaro’s great Western Breach with its stunning glaciers. Sometimes, the walls of

the Western Breach are draped with extensive ice curtains. You are west of the Kibo volcano

cone, where Uhuru Peak is located. After a short hike westward, you will reach the Shira

campsite. The night at this exposed camp will be colder, with temperatures dropping below

freezing. Make sure you put on layers of clothing to keep warm.

Accommodation ( Camping Full board)

DAY 5: SHIRA CAMP TO LAVA TOWER TO BARRANCO CAMP

•Elevation (ft): 12,500ft to 13,000ft

•Distance: 10 km

•Hiking Time: 6-8 hours

•Habitat: Semi Desert

From the Shira Plateau, we continue to the east up a ridge, passing the junction towards the

peak of Kibo. As we continue, our direction changes to the southeast towards the Lava Tower

called the "Shark's Tooth." Shortly after the tower, we come to the second junction, which brings

us up to the Arrow Glacier at an altitude of 16,000ft. We now continue down to the Barranco

Hut at an altitude of 13,000ft. Here, we rest, enjoy dinner, and overnight. Although you end the

day at the same elevation as when you started, this day is very important for acclimatization

and will help your body prepare for summit day.

DAY 6: BARRANCO CAMP TO KARANGA CAMP

•Elevation (ft): 13,000ft to 13,100ft

•Distance: 5 km

•Hiking Time: 4-5 hours

•Habitat: Alpine Desert

After spending a night under the Great Barranco Wall, you climb this awesome obstacle, one of

the trek's highlights. Topping out just below the Heim Glacier, you can now appreciate just how

beautiful Kilimanjaro is. The Machame route then winds down through Karanga Valley and goes

over intervening ridges and valleys to join the Mweka route, which you will use later for

descending the mountain. You have now completed the South Circuit, which offers views of the

summit from many angles. Tonight, you will rest at Karanga Camp, where the last water stop is.

Accommodation ( Camping Full board)

DAY 7: KARANGA CAMP TO BARAFU CAMP

•Elevation (ft): 13,100ft to 15,300ft

•Distance: 4 km

•Hiking Time: 4-5 hours•Habitat: Alpine Desert

The famous snow of Kilimanjaro is near the summit of the mountain far above Barafu. Camp.

Barafu is a Swahili word for “ ICE.” It is totally exposed to the ever-present gales. Barafu Camp is

not a very hospitable place to spend the night. Your tent will be pitched on a narrow, stony,

wind-swept ridge, so familiarize yourself with the terrain before dark to avoid accidents. Prepare

your equipment and warm clothing for your summit attempt. After an early supper, you will go

to bed around 7 pm and try to get a few hours of precious sleep before a very early start the

next day.

Accommodation ( Camping Full board)

DAY 8: BARAFU CAMP TO SUMMIT TO MWEKA HUT

•Elevation (ft): 15,300ft to 19,345ft (and down to 10,000ft)

•Distance: 5 km ascent / 12 km descent

•Hiking Time: 7-8 hours ascent / 4-6 hours descent

•Habitat: Arctic

Very early in the morning (midnight to 2 a.m.), we continue our way to the summit between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. You head northwesterly and ascend through heavy scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim. This is the most mentally and physically challenging portion of the trek.

At Stella Point (18,600 ft), you will stop for a short rest and be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see (weather permitting). From Stella Point, you may encounter snow all the way on your one-hour ascent to the summit. At Uhuru Peak, you have reached the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa. Faster hikers will see the sunrise from the summit. From the summit, we now descend, continuing straight down to the Mweka Hut camp site, stopping at Barafu for lunch. You will want gaiters and trekking poles for the loose gravel going down. Mweka Camp is situated in the upper forest, and mist or rain can be expected in the late afternoon. Later in the evening, we enjoy our last dinner on the mountain and a well-earned sleep.

Accommodation ( Camping Full board)

DAY 9: MWEKA CAMP TO MOSHI

•Elevation (ft): 10,000ft to 5,400ft

•Distance: 10 km

•Hiking Time: 3-4 hours

•Habitat: Rain Forest

After breakfast, we continue the descent to the Mweka Park Gate to receive your summit.

Certificates. At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy. Gaiters and trekking poles will help.

Shorts and T-shirts are plenty to wear (keep rain gear and warmer clothing handy).

From the gate, you continue another hour to Mweka Village. A vehicle will meet you at Mweka

Village to drive you back to the hotel in Moshi.
