Serenity in the Wilderness
Wellness retreats in Africa are utterly unique to what most expect a wellness retreat to be. Not that they're the complete opposite of the definition, but Africa offers something a little "extra"—something you won't find anywhere else in the world.
Your mind and body will unwind immediately when you arrive on the continent. The serenity of the unspoiled and pristine natural environment will soothe your soul. Fresh fruit and nutritious, organic food are available everywhere in Africa. Throughout the continent, life is celebrated exuberantly, allowing your mind to take a break from the everyday hustle and bustle with space to relax finally fully.
Realizing the overwhelming need for mental and physical breaks, Urth Expedition has created Wilderness Wellness Retreat in Kenya and Tanzania and the Saffron of Morocco Retreat..
Wilderness Wellness Retreat
In northern Kenya, the Samburu tribespeople are also known as the ‘Butterfly People’ – not only because of their vibrant traditional dresses but because of the freedom with which they enjoy a simple life that is intrinsically connected to the earth. Their serene existence amidst the raw and rugged wilderness of the northern desert provides the required inspiration for a Wilderness Wellness Retreat – a retreat suitable for those seeking a wellness-inspired safari.
Wellness and Adventure Retreat in Kenya
This is a once-in-a-lifetime, nearly all-inclusive trip for adventure-seekers, the go-with-the-flow types, and the people ready to do something big and bold! Think of this retreat as a vacation with a side of wellness in the form of a mobility/yoga/fitness class once a day. We get many questions about how “advanced” you must be to join this retreat, and the answer is that you don’t have to be advanced! We welcome total newbies, beginners, intermediate, and advanced. Everyone is welcome. This is about a week of great fun with awesome, like-minded people, exciting adventure, delicious food, and drink, exploring the beautiful conservancy to see the animals and a little bit of optional movement each day to feel great.
THE KENYA YOGA RETREAT SCHEDULE
Our days typically begin early; as the sun rises over Mt Kenya, we’re on our mats saluting it and tuning in to the sweet smell of the distant grumble of elephants, of damp grass and lions, and the twitter of birdsong all around us. This is always my favorite part of these retreats; this is such a magical hour, and even though it’s so hard to get yourself there, it’s always so incredible and very, very worth it.
We usually have a picnic breakfast out in the bush or on safari, and then our mornings are spent game-driving the open plains of the Conservancy to see what’s been happening at night. The Conservancy is a haven for wildlife and, as far as I’m concerned (and I’ve traveled extensively in Kenya), the best place for wildlife in terms of density and variety in Kenya after the Masai Mara. We will see lions, cheetahs, hyenas, elephants, huge herds of giraffes, zebra, black and white rhinos, buffalo, and other plains game almost daily.
After lunch at the camp, an afternoon siesta, or yoga class, we’d head out again for a shorter drive and find a spot on the plains to drink, have a snack, a glass of wine, and watch the sun go down on our incredible day. I love to feel everyone’s energy and excitement as they share their favorite moments from the day and look forward to what’s to come. And when we drive back to camp in the evening, we’d often pull out a spotlight and look for creatures roaming through the darkness on the way home.
We will stay in gorgeous cottages on the edge of the conservancy. We describe them as "glamping, heavy on the glam," but we have been told time and again that we are really underselling it. You’ll get electricity, hot running water, a very comfortable bed in the room of your choosing, and a private en suite bathroom in each room that is beautifully appointed, complete with shampoo, conditioner, and lotion. Each cottage has an oversized main living area with a fireplace, comfortable couches, and a kitchen table, and all rooms have an oversized veranda that looks right out onto the plains. It is normal to see elephants right from your room! The last time I was there, a lion was roaring at 6 am on the property!
It’s truly a WILD experience unlike any other.

Private Yoga Safari Retreats
If you are looking for a retreat to Europe, Southeast Asia, or South America, you’ll have hundreds of options to choose from! However, when it comes to Africa, the options are extremely limited. That’s where I step in. Having spent the last ten years organizing private safaris for solo travelers, couples, and groups from around the world, I know Sub-Saharan Africa better than most. I’ve traveled extensively through Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Uganda, Botswana, South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Morocco, and believe me when I say there is no better place to tie up the mindful practice of yoga with an adventurous and wild experience than in Africa
