Tatu Rafiki
In Moshi, the gateway town to Mount Kilimanjaro resides Tatu Rafiki ( translates) to "Three Friends," a shop composed of three deaf tailors incorporating #upcycling as part of their sustainable business model. Their products serve as art pieces, cultural commentary, and a sense of connection.
Tatu Rafiki repurposes bags and sneakers with bright and colorful Kitenge (African wax print fabric) and stitches apparel through various materials available in the local markets.
Urth Expedition is proud to be partnering with Tatu Rafiki and Ashima Awakening.
Here we address people's needs on both ends: globally providing non-medical masks for daily usage and supporting a business that was financially struggling due to the effects of COVID-19.
So far, they have built a global community, proudly completing over 1000 masks and shipping products to more than six different countries around the world. Tatu Rafiki has been able to pay off their taxes for the year and renew their lease till Spring 2021.
