The Mother of the World!

I advocate mindful travel, exploring and capturing the world with love and respect for our planet, and helping people travel the world ethically, authentically, and mindfully- through this blog and my photo safari trips in Africa. I believe that travel makes you a better person and enriches your life if you treat 'Mother Earth' and all its inhabitants the way you want to be treated, with love and respect! I advocate for sustainable travel and the protection of our wildlife. Nature can heal us, and everyone deserves to see these beautiful places and moments that have impacted my life.

Visiting Africa has been one of my life's most exciting and enjoyable times, and I have lifelong memories to prove it… Most people who have traveled with me have never forgotten our times together, and we have made friends for life!

Africa….Thank you for the past ten years. You have brought me so many experiences.

Some of my experience in Africa may entice you to come to the motherland…maybe they will make you pack your bags and go (or not?!) Or maybe make you consider a career change?

This one time in Africa….I will never forget.....

Being offered many cows to become a Masaai wife, I didn't take it up because I am sure I would have fought with his other wives…And maybe I'd be a bit jealous of his time with those other wives. Ha-ha

Being kissed by a giraffe and subsequently getting a Giraffe' pash' rash from it. They say the Giraffe's saliva is a strong Antiseptic….

Having hippos politely stomp on my neighbors' tent while they were sleeping on their first ever …needless to say, I learned a lot from that experience, and it wasn't an Urth Expedition tour, ha-ha.

Having seen the MIGRATION in the Serengeti….Priceless, and words can not explain how that was so sensational.

Having gotten a flat tire in the Mara right next to a pride of lions, I dutifully 'watched' my driver back while he changed it from the safety of my seat.

Hiking the seven Summits in Africa in seven weeks for seven causes was one of the most amazing adventures ever!!

Hiking Mount Kilimanjaro, then again and again and again, all 15 times. I hiked every route on Mount Kilimanjaro, some 2 to 3 times.

I was using a plastic garbage bag on Mount Karasimbi in Rwanda because I forgot my rain gear :-) I have never laughed so hard in my life.

Gorge Swings in Zambia, Snorkelling in Zanzibar, Cocktails in Zanzibar, Performing a Tango dance on New Year at a fancy hotel in Arusha.

I had a juvenile Gorilla kick me, which made me roll with my camera still in my hand, which resulted in some fantastic shots.

Yep, I have had a few experiences that have made my heart race!

Africa is a place of contrast, adventure, beauty, colors, and, most importantly, FUN!! The things I miss the most about my travel life are the people, the locals I meet along the way, the friendliness of East Africa, the waves of the kids when we pass in the trucks, the old person working so hard in the field but all done with a smile. Working with my hardworking team of guides and porters along the way-they become your 'family' while you are out there…

Never a dull moment when you are looking after crew and trips on the road!! Such is this industry… A typical day can consist of trawling through my emails, contacting the team with updates, whether it be a road is closed, a passenger missed their flight and will have to catch up with the team elsewhere, confirming prices for clients who do not want to leave the trip and instead extend on tour to the final destination…happens regularly with my incredible team no one ever wants a safari to end… Making plans for a truck that has had a breakdown (very rarely, our Trucks are STRONG!!). Balancing accounts, truck scheduling, crew scheduling, crew wages, crew feedback form, and crew phone calls on the fantastic 24 /7 emergency phone that I get the honor of manning from time to time.

Be careful if you're considering coming….They say certain people come to Africa, and it just gets 'under' their skin, and they never leave…It looks like I'm on that team! It's not a bad thing! I am here to stay a while.

Sometimes, a man is not born into his own home – sometimes, he finds his home amongst people he has never known. And it is then that a man finds true peace.

Where does the Big Five come from?

The 'Big 5' originated from the days when hunters considered these animals the most dangerous to pursue. Except for the Buffalo, all of these animals are tragically endangered because of the poaching crisis or other reasons, making protecting and cherishing our wildlife more important than ever.

Primates of Africa

If you want to add different species of primates, you should add Uganda, Rwanda, Ethiopia, or Madagascar to your bucket list. In Uganda, you will find Gorillas, Chimpanzees, and other smaller primates like different species of colobus monkeys. Visit Ethiopia and trek through the Semien Mountains to photograph the Gelada Baboons, also known as the 'bleeding-heart' monkeys. In Madagascar, you can spot different species of Lemurs, like the ring-tailed lemur, which are also primates! Africa would not be Africa without these magnificent creatures.

Visit Africa to witness the most beautiful sunsets in the world.

Typical orange African sunset with a silhouette of an Acacia tree

As the sun sets, the grass on the savannah glows gold, and the silhouette of an acacia tree appears on the horizon. The sky turns from blue and purple colors into the orange and red colors of the setting sun.

At the end of an exciting day of game viewing on the plains of Africa, it's a tradition to stop for a sundowner (Definition of a sundowner is a refreshing (alcoholic) drink taken at sunset in the African bush to end your afternoon safari game drive adventure in style: a so-called safari-inspired happy hour while enjoying a cold beer, wine, or a gin-tonic to enjoy the sunset. Whether the sun sets above the open savannah, behind iconic Baobab trees, on a lake, over the colorful dunes, or in the sea, you will never get tired of it.

Who doesn't love these orange African sunsets?!

And it doesn't stop there. The African night skies host millions of bright stars, and the sunrise is a real teaser to experience—a perfect way to start another incredible day in Africa.

Travel Africa for its stunning and ever-changing landscapes

Africa is blessed with magnificent, diverse landscapes like tropical beaches and jungles, deserts and mountains, open savannahs, and everything in between. The landscape constantly changes as you travel through Africa, but its beauty always remains.

Beaches in Africa

If you are looking for white sandy beaches, go to East African countries like Tanzania. (Zanzibar), Kenya, Mozambique, or Madagascar. These African countries have stunning coastlines with wide beaches and palm trees. Don't forget to order a coconut drink to keep you hydrated while enjoying the sun on one of the paradise beaches in Africa.

Adventure-capital of Africa

Visit Victoria Falls – one of the seven natural wonders of the world – if you like a bit of adventure. I jumped off the 111-meter-high Victoria Falls Bridge and had a swim in Devil's Pool on the edge of Victoria Falls on the Zambian side. It's an exhilarating bucket list adventure.

Magical Savannah Plains

Would you like to see savannah plains with typical African Acacia (umbrella) trees? Visit the wide-open spaces of the Maasai Mara. (The Masai Mara National Reserve is one of the most popular safari destinations in East Africa. A Masai Mara safari in Kenya guarantees a memorable experience with spectacular game drives and..in Kenya and Serengeti in Tanzania.)

African Desert

If you are a lover of dunes and desert, definitely add Namibia.

(Travel to Namibia and experience the country 's amazing wildlife, tribes, and endless horizons. From red dunes and deserts to canyons and coastlines. Explore Namibia with my helpful Ultimate Namibia Travel Guide ). to your bucket list to climb Dune 45 or Big Daddy Dune, which is located in the Sesriem Canyon near Sossusvlei to watch the sunrise over the Namib Desert, and visit the iconic white salt flat with its dead trees in Dead Vlei or 'Dodevlei' to discover the best of Namibia.

Baobab lovers have to travel to Madagascar, a Treasure Island with impressive landscapes from rainforests to dry deserts and from stunning beaches to mountains and stone forests. Madagascar has many endemic flora and fauna, like different species of Baobabs that can't be found anywhere else in the world!

Africa's Rainbow Nation

Visit South Africa

Travel to South Africa and love its free-roaming wildlife, stunning landscapes, warm-hearted people, the City of Cape Town, and stunning views. Discover a diverse range of landscapes combined with the most beautiful city in the world and great architecture. South Africa has it all! From beautiful mountains like the Drakensberg Mountains and Table Mountain to amazing plateaus, ridges, beaches, and more. Add Cape Town to your Africa bucket list as it's the most beautiful city in Africa and maybe even the most beautiful city in the world. All the different African landscapes are breathtaking, and spectacular views are everywhere.

African Beauty has many faces.

Africa is a diverse continent where tribes, strong traditions, and stunning beauty coexist. Africa teaches you that beauty has many faces. South Africa alone has eleven official languages and tons of tribes or ethnic groups, and that is also the reason why South Africa is called the 'Rainbow Nation

The iconic nomadic Maasai are one of the most famous tribes of Eastern Africa who live in traditional villages near the Maasai Mara and Serengeti. They are incredibly welcoming and love to share their culture with you. In the Southern part of Africa are the Zulu (South Africa) and Himba people (Namibia), among the most well-known tribes. The Himba are well known because of the red coloring of their skin, and the reason why the Zulu are widely known because of Shakaland, the birthplace of the legendary Shaka Zulu.

Like Kevin Fraser once said, 'Africa is not just a place, it's a feeling'. And that is exactly what it is. The beauty of the places and the people, as well as the difficulty experienced by those living there, make you feel both very grateful for what you have and in a strange way, also longing for more simplicity. Africa will make you feel more grounded and connected to nature, the people, and yourself. It forces you to be in the moment because you don't know what the next minute will bring. Being so close to nature makes you feel alive and free.

I am always taking the scenic route. Happy when I hear the birds sing in the morning and excited every time the sky turns in pretty colors. Interested in self-development and committed to being a responsible traveler.

The Journey will end... I always cry when I drive the long road to the Airport and get one more glimpse at Mount Kilimanjaro. I feel alive and uplifted in the African bush. I miss it already!

Yours truly, GABRIELE BROWN
